Based on the vehicle code for 2001 it is completely legal except for one little part... You CAN have any color you want in the back as long as it's not a flashing light, is diffused, etc. The thing is, one little sentence says "must be 6" from any other marker or signal". Or something to that effect (I have it all at home). The edge of the panel light is only about 3-4" from the reverse lights so it's technically illegal. Already been asked about it once, but he let me go.
